Lok Sabha Elections take place every 5 years, so that the citizens of India choose their desired candidates to rule the country for the next 5 years. The voting process is same in all the constituencies and the election live counting is done on a pre-decided date to determine which party has won the elections.

In 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, which is popularly known as the elections that experienced the “Modi Wave” saw the evident dominance of BJP led NDA getting 282 out of the 545 seats.  BJP has emerging as the single largest party obtaining such high number of seats for the first time in Indian Political history.

But this conventional rule of 5-year gap between 2 Lok Sabha elections has a few exceptional situations where in an interim or Bye-election needs to be conducted in between this 5-year period. It is conducted same as the Lok Sabha elections.

The situations and circumstances that can lead to a Lok Sabha Bye Election include the death or resignation of Seat by an MP in order to become a CM or any other reason, the criminal conviction of the incumbent MP, Recall elections due to Non Governance, etc.

Political Background of Bhandara-Gondia and Palghar Lok Sabha Bye Election 2018

Bhandara-Gondia Lok Sabha Bye Election 2018 – The Bhandara Gondia Political battleground had seen a few intense battles between NCP and BJP.  NCP led by the dominant local leadership of Praful Patel and BJP which was formerly led by the local leadership of prominent OBC Leader Nana Patole.

In 2009, the Seat was won by Praful Patel defeating Nana Patole, while in 2014, Nana Patole defeated Praful Patel, riding the Modi Wave. But in December 2017, Nana Patole openly expressed disappointment and resentment against the BJP (Bharti Janta Party) leadership policies and thereafter left the Lok Sabha seat as well as the Party. This led to  need for Bhandara- Gondia Lok Sabha Bye-Election.

Palghar Lok Sabha Bye-Election 2018 – In Palghar, the sitting BJP MP Chintaman Wanga died earlier this year in the month of January. His death required a Palghar Lok Sabha Bye-Election and the political battle started in Palghar immediately. Shiv Sena offered a Bye-election nomination to Chintaman Wanga’s son Srinivas Wanga. He accepted it thereby leaving BJP in a Setback. This triggered a political fire between BJP and Shiv Sena.
