India consists of a Federal structure of Government with the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha as the two houses of Parliament at Central level while the Vidhan Sabha and Vidhan Parishad at every State level. All these houses have a prescribed number of members to be filled in. Lok Sabha, for instance, has 545 seats out of which 543 are directly elected by the people and 2 Anglo Indian candidates are elected by the President himself.
These members are elected in a process called as general elections, which takes place every 5 years. Such general elections were previously conducted in 2014 where Bharti Janta Party (BJP) led NDA alliance won fair and square with a clean sweep against the Congress-led UPA.
The subsequent general Lok Sabha Elections would thus be conducted in 2019 but there are certain MP seats which might get vacated in between this 5-year period. In such case, there is an interim election process conducted similarly to the general elections, known as the Bye-elections. Situations requiring a Bye-election include the Death or Resignation by the MP, Criminal or Corruption charges and conviction against the MP or else any other reason of the seat being vacated. The Bye-elections process and judgments are all overseen by the Election Commission.
Nagaland Recent Political Background
State Legislative Assembly elections took place in Nagaland during the months February-March earlier this year. There were total 60 seats for which 320 candidates were battling against each other with at least 31 seats needed for a majority to be successful in forming the Government.
Some of the major competitors were Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and Naga People’s Front (NPF) with Bharti Janta Party (BJP) eyeing for either of these. Prior to this election, BJP dissolved its previous alliance with NPF and formed an alliance with NDPP led by the former CM Neiphiu Rio. Majority of the seats were won by the BJP and NDPP alliance, thereby forming a Saffron Alliance Government in Nagaland.
